What to Bring — Register a Vehicle

To register a vehicle in Alberta, bring the required identification and vehicle documents with you to Riverbend Registries.

  • Proof of ownership — such as a bill of sale, lease agreement or other acceptable ownership document.
  • Proof of valid insurance for the vehicle, showing the name of the person requesting the registration.
  • Acceptable identification.
  • Vehicle inspection documentation, if required. Some vehicles may require an inspection before they can be registered in Alberta.

A vehicle coming into Alberta may have additional registration or inspection requirements. Contact Riverbend Registries before your visit if you're unsure what applies to your vehicle.

What to Bring — ​Transfer a Registration

To transfer an existing Alberta vehicle registration and licence plate to another vehicle, bring the required identification and vehicle documents with you to Riverbend Registries.

  • Acceptable identification.
  • Proof of ownership for the vehicle you are transferring the registration to, such as a bill of sale, lease agreement or other acceptable ownership document.
  • Proof of valid insurance for the new vehicle, showing the name of the person requesting the registration transfer.
  • Your existing Alberta vehicle registration information and licence plate.
  • Vehicle inspection documentation, if required. Some vehicles may require an inspection before they can be registered in Alberta.
Recently Purchased a Vehicle?

In many cases, an existing Alberta registration and licence plate can be transferred to a newly acquired vehicle. Bring your ownership and insurance documents to Riverbend Registries so the registration can be properly transferred.

What to Bring — ​Cancel a Registration

To cancel an Alberta vehicle registration, bring the required identification and registration information with you to Riverbend Registries.

  • Acceptable identification.

  • The licence plate associated with the registration being cancelled.
Returning or Disposing of a Vehicle?

Cancelling the registration ensures the vehicle is no longer registered in your name under that registration. Depending on the circumstances and time remaining on the registration, a refund may apply.

Alberta's online driver's licence renewal service is temporarily unavailable. Driver's licence renewals can currently be completed in person at Riverbend Registries. When Alberta restores online renewal service, Riverbend will update this page with the online option.

What to Bring — Exchange a Driver's Licence

If you're moving to Alberta and hold a driver's licence from another province, territory or country, you may be able to exchange your existing licence for an Alberta driver's licence. Bring your original documents to Riverbend Registries so your eligibility can be determined.

  • Your current driver's licence from your previous province, territory or country.
  • Acceptable identification to confirm your identity.
  • Proof of Alberta residency showing your current Alberta address.
  • Proof of legal entitlement to be in Canada, using acceptable original documentation.
  • Supporting documents for any name change, if the name on your documents differs.

Licence From Outside Canada?

Exchange requirements depend on where your current driver's licence was issued and your driving history. Some drivers may be eligible for a direct exchange, while others may need to complete knowledge or road testing before receiving the appropriate Alberta driver's licence.
